The Organization                                                                                                                             

Clery Center is a national non-profit, located in the Philadelphia region that provides solution-based resources, education, and training around the federal law, the Clery Act, specifically, but also campus safety issues more broadly. The Center’s priority is to help campuses interpret the regulations and apply them to their own, unique campus community. Clery Center uses training spaces to help college and university professionals practice skills that they then apply on-campus and provides tools to support Clery Act planning and implementation.  Clery Center brings together the key players working toward a shared mission: protecting college and university students from campus violence and harm. Clery Center provides support, training and 30 + years of experience to help institutions navigate the demands of transparency and meet the provisions of the Clery Act. The Center helps build stronger bridges between campus law enforcement, students and their families, and the wider higher education community.

Position Overview

This is an exceptional opportunity to lead and further develop Clery’s remarkable and tangible impact on the safety of college and university campuses nationally. The Executive Director, with governance from the Board and input from staff, determines and ensures execution of the overall organizational vision, strategic direction, operating and fiscal policies to ensure successful fulfillment of Clery’s mission.  He or she will strengthen Clery’s reputation and brand — build, maintain and nurture a network of influential contacts relevant to the Clery’s mission and continue to develop cohesion and visibility in the themes that cut across all Clery’s work.

Strategic Management:

  • Lead in the development of the Center’s role in the reauthorization and implementation of the Clery Act.
  • Guide the continued evolution of Clery as a solution-based organization with a clear vision, mission and strategy.
  • Public policy development and implementation, especially at the Federal level, with the capacity to work with legislative parties. Flexibly and creatively expand programs and membership and position the organization to take advantage of opportunities to focus on emerging critical issues.
  • Develop and prioritize program objectives.


  • Oversee membership strategy and expansion.
  • Prepare and oversee annual development plans and diverse funding streams.

External Relations/Communications:

  • Act as the primary spokesperson and liaison representing Clery while working with the broader community, including related organizations, media, public sector and civic leadership.
  • Work to promote new ideas and partnerships through outreach activities with interested audiences.

Program Training:

  • Oversee the training in collaboration with staff.
  • Develop and implement working relations/partnerships locally and nationally with appropriate institutions and policymakers.

Governance and Board Relations:

  • Ensure that Clery receives appropriate support, guidance and supervision from its Board and that the relationship between the Executive Director and the Board is both constructive and nurturing.
  • With the Board nominating committee, identify, cultivate and recruit new board members on occasion.

Fiscal/Fiduciary Management:

  • Ensure overall sound financial management of the organization with the CFO.
  • Develop and administer annual operating budget.
  • Coordinate and oversee activities with professional advisors, including legal counsel, auditors, accountants, and others

Human Resources:

  • Lead the organization, mentoring and ensuring appropriate staff and policies are in place.
  • Perform annual evaluation of staff to assess performance and ensure appropriate alignment with Clery’s strategic and operational goals.

 Critical Skills/Requirements

  • Visionary leader with high energy and the ability to motivate, lead and inspire the Board, staff, collaborating partners and donors.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree in social science, law, management, public health, or related fields desired.
  • A minimum of seven years in an executive or senior management role in higher education, government, non-profit sector, or relevant professional experience.
  • Familiarity with the Clery Act and Title IX and their impact on prevention, victim/survivor assistance, and resource development desired.
  • Strong commitment to the mission and goals of the organization, high ethical standards and accountability.
  • Expertise in public policy development and implementation, especially at the Federal level, with the capacity to work with legislative partners.
  • Forward thinking and flexible in an ever changing political and economic climate.
  • Exemplary relationship building, identity building, influencing skills and a sense of humor.
  • Exceptional communicator, internally and externally, both orally and in writing; ability to distill varied sources of information and communicate clearly and effectively with multiple constituencies, including media and public policy officials.
  • Ability to understand and work with diverse constituencies and multiple viewpoints.
  • Financial, operational, and programmatic skills.
  • Strong commitment to high ethical standards and accountability.

 Preferred Candidates will also possess:

  • Cumulative work experience to include exposure to different work environments i.e., for-profit, public sector and non-profit.
  • Experience using research to inform and advance effective public policy.
  • Work history evidencing leadership, imagination and initiative in creatively moving an organization through change and growth.
