DataArts (formerly the Cultural Data Project) is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower the nonprofit arts and cultural sector with high-quality data and resources in order to strengthen its vitality, performance, and public impact.
DataArts accomplishes this mission by equipping the arts and cultural sector with technology and resources to collect, learn from, and use data more effectively. DataArts strengthens planning and management by offering the Cultural Data Profile (CDP) and a powerful online data management platform that makes standardized information on the financial, operational, and programmatic activities of their own and other cultural nonprofits available. The CDP is used to streamline funding applications across multiple grant programs, while also providing funders with tools to understand and compare the financial health and operations of their grantees. The detailed, reliable DataArts dataset is used for a variety of research and advocacy efforts that advance a stronger arts and cultural sector.
DataArts is a Philadelphia-based independent 501(c)(3) corporation, with an annual operating budget of approximately $4.5 million and 34 staff members. It is an entrepreneurial enterprise with growing earned revenue streams that is supported by more than 100 public and private grantmakers and used by approximately 16,000 cultural nonprofits, (primarily located in 16 states and the District of Columbia). Having just launched an enhanced technology platform in 2016, DataArts is poised for national expansion and deeper impact. The organization’s primary sources of revenue are a combination of private foundation and public arts agency support in the form of operating and project-support grants and contracts for data management, data access, and research services.
The Director of Development and Partnerships (Director) reports to the President and CEO as part of a five-person senior leadership team. This individual will be responsible for securing contributed and earned revenue through strategy development and implementation of institutional fundraising, sales, and strategic partnerships. The Director will lead a team of grantwriters, business development and partner support associates, to build and maintain strong client relationships with foundations, corporations, government agencies, arts service organizations, and service providers to the sector in order to expand the funding mix and increase overall revenue for the organization. A primary responsibility will be to work with DataArts leadership to identify and develop new markets for monetizing data about the cultural sector and data-related services. The Director will also have the ability to assess current systems and make changes as needed to improve the overall functioning and productivity of the department as required to support significant growth in the number of client relationships. This position is based out of the DataArts headquarters in Philadelphia, PA. Exceptional candidates based in other cities along the northeast corridor will be considered.
Leadership, Planning, and Strategy
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the overall organizational strategy, business plan, policies and budgets as member of five-person leadership team.
- Create short and long-term fundraising and business development strategies, projections, and performance targets to meet goals for annual operating income, special campaign needs, and reserve funds. Renew and increase levels of support and diversify sources and types of revenue.
- Actively engage and support the President, Board, and senior staff in the resource development process empowering them with a compelling case for support and strategies for effective solicitations.
- Maintain a high-performance organizational culture, by recruiting, training, managing, and developing a motivated, accountable, and cohesive resource development team.
Resource Development and Sales
- Manage a personal account portfolio, including identifying, cultivating, soliciting (in-person contact, grantwriting, and/or contract negotiation) and stewarding foundation, government, and corporate donors, clients, and prospects.
- Provide direction to fundraising and sales associates responsible for relationship management, renewals, donor cultivation and solicitation. Establish and oversee processes for consistent customer relationship management and data-driven business development, nonprofit sales, and institutional fundraising using CRM, moves management, and marketing systems and approaches.
- Expand DataArts’ national participation and funding footprint by establishing and advancing new relationships with private foundations, corporations, public grantmakers, and strategic business partners and forging opportunities for business ventures.
- Working closely with members of the finance team, oversee grant compliance, management, and reporting. Establish or further develop systems, policies, and processes to manage, monitor, evaluate, and report on grants, partnerships, contracts.
- Work closely with the Director of Communications and Marketing to plan and shape development and marketing communications to reach key targets and expand the donor/client base.
- Serve as liaison to Board Development and Governance Committees, activating their networks, maintaining the Board nominations pipeline, and creating meaningful opportunities for engagement, fundraising, and advocacy.
- Represent the organization before a range of funders and public audiences, and ensure the confidentiality of privileged information.
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s Degree or equivalent work experience in relevant field preferred.
- At least 10 years of progressive experience in nonprofit organizations or for-profits focusing on nonprofit services and sales, with a successful track record of institutional fundraising; business development; sales and marketing; and partnership building. Experience in a national cultural, philanthropic, higher education, research, technology, policy-oriented organization or association of a similar or larger scale, preferred.
- Broad knowledge of resource development, nonprofit management, or grantmaking, including all aspects of institutional fundraising and grants management. Strong network of relationships and track record of identifying, qualifying, and developing relationships, and soliciting support from institutional donors and prospects. Documented success in securing six- and seven-figure gifts desired.
- Experience in guiding successful new business development teams through systematic prospecting, cultivation, sales, and ongoing customer relationship management. Familiarity with the Salesforce CRM platform a plus.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills, with an emphasis on crafting winning grant proposals, developing compelling project descriptions and business pitches, and articulating persuasive cases for support. Ability to coach and develop writing and solicitation skills in staff.
- Strategic thinker with a high degree of intellectual curiosity, rigor, and creativity. Must be highly flexible and motivated by a fluid, fast-paced environment with a staff culture characterized by its drive, accountability, and commitment to customer-centered value creation and service.
- Ability to communicate confidently and effectively with coworkers, program leaders, donors, prospects, and potential partners. Experience working directly with board leadership desired.
- Proven ability to build strong external relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
